My husband and I are considering moving to CA for law school. The school is in Santa Ana which from these posts I don't think is a great area to live. We will be on a fairly fixed income...I'm willing to drive about 45 minutes a day to get to school. Is there a good place to start looking for an apartment? I don't care about scenery- just safety where I live and go about doing my normal activities. My husband is from Saudi Arabia and I especially don't want any trouble for him (some other states we have lived in haven't been very open or accepting). Any help would be much appreciated!

Parts of Santa Ana are fine. this is where you will find the cheapest rent. Are you going to Trinity? If so, look at the new apartments/condos directly accross the street from Mainplace mall. There is a park on the other corner. It is a nice location. Also you could look into the artists loft area. If you are going to Trinity, Orange is also a great option that is very close. Old town orange is wonderful and has some affordable rentals. Look for an apartment on top of a garge in old town. These will nto be the cool new apartments with a pool, gym etc. Just a basic place to live, but affordable and in a great location. It is hard to beat old town orange.

Ignore the posts that tell you that Santa Ana is horrid or you will die there. Those types of absurd generalizations are generated from fear and ignorance and are meaningless. Part odf the city are awful parts are fine, parts are really cool. I lived there for 9 years while raising 5 children and it was wonderful. Our kids did great, had a nice time and everything was fine for them. Not a lot of parks though. Lots of Hispanics. that is not a bad thing unless you are prejudiced and afraid to experience a differnet culture. However in the apartments that I mentioned (Near mainplace) it is prettymuch milquetoast

You might be thinking of Whittier Law School, on the border of Santa Ana?
Maybe try Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and/or Brea.

If its the law school on Harbor north of the 405 a few blocks I would try Costa Mesa(or anywhere near South Coast Plaza in that Santa Ana/Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area directly around it)

LA and Orange counties are fairly diverse and generally accepting. It's not so much the accepting part when it comes to Santa Ana as much as just making sure you don't pick the wrong street. Evenso, it's not like it's a warzone. Just has lots of poor neighborhoods and the occassional truely bad neighborhood.

Orange County is a pretty safe place.

Orange is a pretty old city.
Anaheim is very ethnic, not too safe.
Garden Grove is very ethnic, not too safe.
Westminster is very ethnic, not too safe.
Fountain Valley is a nice place to be. You'll like it there.
Costa Mesa is busier than most other cities.
Irvine is the ideal suburban community.
Tustin is somewhat urban.

you forgot---Santa Ana is a DUMP! There are very little parts that are nice or safe.

How about living in Mission Viejo?

Yeah Santa Ana sucks but there's no reason to live as far away as Mission Viejo if he's going to school in Santa Ana. There's plenty of nice places to live much closer.

Thanks for the advice--- I am planning on attending Trinity Law School, but I believe my husband will continue his education at CSU-Fullerton. I don't know if this changes any advice you might have. Still, thank you very much!

thats not too bad actually. trinity is in the northeast corner of santa ana if i recall, close to the 22.. that puts you not too far from the 57 which takes you right to the csu fullerton campus.. best place you can live is either in north santa ana(which has plenty of fine places), orange, eastern anaheim, fullerton, or placentia. basically, look at a map, pick somewhere near the 57 between fullerton and the end(where it hits the 22) and you'll be okay with the commutes both ways

Go look at Orange. Old town is great. A perfect location for you and lots of great churches. Decent rental opportunities too.
