These are good answers. Thanks, guys. Kauaidooley, my screen name comes from the great Kareem Abdul Jabbar, famous Laker and all-time leading NBA scorer. His signature shot gave opponents nightmares. One of them had a literal nightmare. He woke up panicked because all he could dream about was the sky hook and how unstoppable it was.

I agree that the ostentatious show of wealth shouldn't really affect me at all. DC has its own status culture thing, which is based on superficial but probably more substantial things than a car or boat. In any case, people do judge a book by its cover. But in any place, you will find people who will accept you regardless of your occupation or possessions, as long as you have a direction in life and are an interesting person.

I work as a custodian. I still have a little shame about admitting that when people ask what I do for a living, but I need to work on that, because I'm a full-time tax payer and am part of the machine, like anyone else. These days, being full-time employed at all in anything outside of fast food is something to be thankful for. Not that full-time at McDonalds is something to be ashamed of.
