True, Guns and ammo aren't cheap, but it's not like you have to replace your guns and replenish your ammo supplies every two weeks because they spoiled and went bad.
Well, the main character in the story had by my count a shotgun, three rifles, and a handgun. But didn't have enough money to buy a tank of gas for his old truck or anything to eat beyond ramen noodles.

If they were ordinary rifles and not rusted junk then all combined they could very well could have been worth more than the truck he was driving.

And that is the sad truth in the story. Living well remotely in the woods isn't easy for most people, things can get tough and even harder in the winter. If you're vehicle breaks down 50 miles from town and you know how to fix it, you still need the parts. And, when the closest grocery store, gas station and Doctor's office are 50 miles away, well I think you get the idea.

I have lived rural all my life. I even developed bare rural property once. I was young, competent, and had access to free use of heavy equipment, and it was still like crawling out of a deep hole. Every time I turned around I needed something that I had not anticipated. I had a full time, good paying job, and was young and healthy enough to work until dark every night on my home after work, and at least 12 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday.

Whatever your target, aim high, because you will always hit low. If you aim for survival, you won't. I was aiming for upper middle class, and barely squeaked by. Something will always go wrong. In the case of buying property sight unseen, there's not much way for things to go right.

Is it true that people living in Oregon Pines are all, or mostly, living on social security check?
