John Day??
So, has anyone even been to John Day?? I did notice that previous inquiries about John Day and the surrounding area have also gone unanswered, so I am thinking this may not be the best place to relocate to....

John Day, OR
I have been to John Day and stayed there. I really liked it. It's very small town in a very interesting geological area and it's pretty. However, it probably would only be interesting to you if you're looking for a small town atmosphere. Personally, it was one of my favorite places.

I've been a few times to the annual solar festival held here in July.
It's a ways out there (~ 5 hrs from PDX) 2hrs from Pendleton, probably ~ 4hrs to Boise. A pretty spot. I reckon, plenty cold in winter and equally hot in summer, but forest is not so far away, and a creek runs through town. Both farming and forestry economies, and it is one of the 'larger' towns out in the boonies; multiple stores, motels, eateries. Folks are friendly and helpful. probably a good destination for someone with a 'western' bent. (rodeo in town). Not sure on medical, but I think it has a small hospital or clinic, it's kinda the 'king pin' of the region.

John Day area...
A nice affordable place in the middle of 'no where'. We bought our retirement home in Canyon City (2 miles away). John Day has a hospital, a decent grocery store (chester's payless) and some fast food places. No Wal-Mart, home depot or cosco... No gangs, no graffitti and no major crime problems to speak of.
The type of place a young person escapes from - a place that a person could retire to. Good hunting, nice scenery, very friendly people. However, limited job opportunities and modest pay is the norm in rural eastern oregon.
Hope this helps...

See our reply to marieh regarding Prairie City which is 13 miles east of John Day. I commute to John Day to work. We love it here! It's safe and beautiful. It doesn't surprise me that more people have not replied that are from the local area. We spend most of our time enjoying the abundant outdoor activities. The snow mostly keeps to the mountains. It can get cold but the weather on the valley floor is sunny and beautiful most of the year.

I live in Canyon City, a mile down the road from John Day - we, and many other ex-Californians have relocated here for the vast variety of scenery, great fishing and hunting, and LOOOOOW home and property prices.

John Day, Oregon
I travel to John Day once or twice a year for the last 10 years. It's a beautiful friendly little community. HOT in the summer and cold in the winter.
There's not much going on in the evenings there so take a good book. The Best Western is clean, and quiet, very comfortable and priced right. There are several good restaurants in town though my favorite has got to be Snaffle Bit. Check out their burgers and fries.
