I am moving to Roseburg in a month from Virginia and my wife and I did a pre move visit last month. What are the best places to buy or rent in the area? Here are the criteria we are looking at. Safe, clean, friendly, close knit communities and neighborhoods, decent schools, etc? What are your thoughts on the areas of Roseburg, downtown, eastridge, hughcrest, Harvard road area, north Roseburg?? What about outside towns? Sutherlin, Oakland, Glide, Winston, Green (we drove through Green and our first impression was not great. We call it the confederate states of Oregon). We loved Sutherlin, Oakland, and Glide but are they reasonable daily commutes to Roseburg and decent places to live?

If you like to fish or boating, rafting, & view beautiful scenery, i would suggest look for a place you will love, by the Umpqua River or Cowcreek...

Avoid SE south of the downtown area. Hucrest is nice but older, with many homes that used to be owner occupied but have been converted to rentals. The newer developments are west of Hucrest. NE (Cloverdale neighborhood) is older with a high rental rate. There are some new developments south of NE Douglas Ave of fairly modest middle class homes, most of which are owner occupied. Out toward UCC and Winchester there are substantial developments of fairly new homes.

I would highly recommend looking at the Hucrest area. It's very safe and located far away from downtown where all the crime and misery is. There are pockets of neighborhoods in that area that are fairly affluent, clean, and everyone tends to have their heads on their shoulders. Out all the areas in Roseburg, it has the most suburban-like feel to it.

If you have some money I would also look a little up north by Winchester. The houses there are pricey but since it's an upscale neighborhood it's super-safe and well-to-do. The commute into Roseburg also isn't as bad compared to farther north in Sutherlin or Oakland.
