I don't know if this is the correct answer to your question but having someone pump your gas keeps people empolyed...I for one like having someone pump my gas for me.

I don't know why either, but it adds to the allure maybe. Plus, it makes sense to me - after all, you aren't expected to bag your own purchases at most stores, why be made to pump your own gas?

State law---
And it makes Oregon unique.
Just let it go, and get use to it.

It is like asking why do the butter sticks come in short squat sticks, called Western Pack Butter, instead of the eastern USA style of butter sticks.

Or why.... (yada, yada, yada)

Just live with it.

The short answer is because we don't want to.

This topic always comes up during legislature and there's always a public outcry from many different groups:
- The public just doesn't want to pump gas (especially in the rain which is 90% of the time)
- Seniors and disabled claim self service will eliminate their ability to buy gas without hunting down and paying full service prices
- The gas station attendents cry that they need the jobs and that it provides many entry level jobs.
- There is no evidence by looking at adjoining states that self service reduces gas prices

If you don't like it then move or join a cardlock where you can pump your own gas.

Why is it Hellman's back east and Best Foods out west?
Why is the same cut of meat called something different in different regions?
Why is the sky blue?
Why do fools fall in love?
Why is it ok for motorcyclists to pump their own but car drivers can't?

It just is.

I think it's funny how people are always asking, "why can't you...." it sounds like they actually want to pump their own gas. I'll never understand it; why do non-Oregonians actually want to pump their own gas?

I read a post from a conservative who claimed that if we were allowed to pump our own gas, the cost savings would be passed down to the customers. Good luck with that. And people call liberals idealistic dreamers?!?

The first time I drove through Oregon I was leading a group of guys to Portland from So Cal - 7 cars total. We stopped for gas, everyone got out and started grabbing their pump and two guys came running out yelling at us. We didn't know the law, so we were confused until they explained the law.

Funny looking back at the situation.
