If it weren't for Disney, all the working newcomers would move out and Orlando would be nothing but a r&dn&ck rathole.

This is true...nothing left but the two of the largest medical providers in the state, one of the largest University by enrollment in the country, a budding medical research and high tech industry and significant defense sector. Other than that, just a rathole. Thank goodness for Disney saving us all.

You forgot the other 2054954954 theme parks and attractions that would be left over besides Disney.

If Disney left, Orlando would crumble like ancient Rome and years from now archaeologists will uncover Space Mountain and exclaim "Here once stood the mighty city of Orlando".

How big do you really think UCF would be today if Disney had not reinvented Orlando ? Do you really think the budding medical facilities would be here ? With no Disney tourist $, the other attractions would soon close up shop and Orlando would revert to the sleepy town it once was.

Ignoring the odd comparison of Orlando to Ancient Rome, what would any city be if its catalyst never came?

Catalyst and sustenance ... without sustenance comes starvation. Better hope Disney never pulls up stakes ...

Not sure how WDW with a local workforce of only 60,000 is the "sustenance" of Orlando? Are they the largest employer sure, but they are no longer single handedly responsible for Orlando's job market strength or growth. Actually, WDW is the largest single site employer in the US and even with a loss that grave, I believe Orlando could continue to function not only as a city but also as a prime destination with Universal, Sea World, convention business plus not to mention all the places locals work, visit, and spend money unrelated to the parks.

I agree. I think Disney was the seed, but now Orlando has sprouted on its own to the point where Disney is not as crucial as it once was.

Universal has been dominating lately with the harry potter attractions

And if oil was never discovered in Texas or Gold in California....all these what if's. The reality is love or hate, Disney is here, and yes they changed the Central Florida landscape for good. I'm glad they came, glad they stayed, and have no problem being associated/identified with them going into the future. We are so much more than Disney, but Disney will always be a big part of us as Central Florida. What's wrong with that? Ask someone who's bothered by the success this relationship brings because I certainly don't mind.
