Scores on the SAT have sunk to the lowest level since the college admission test was overhauled in 2005, adding to worries about student performance in the nation’s high schools.
“Simply doing the same things we have been doing is not going to improve these numbers,” Schmeiser said in a statement. “This is a call to action to do something different to propel more students to readiness.”

SAT scores at lowest level in 10 years, fueling worries about high schools - The Washington Post

Give people vouchers. Let them send their kids to private schools. Make the public schools compete to get butts in their chairs.

Exactly, and underpaid teachers having to foot the bill for much of the supplies needed and let's not forget fill in parenting for the kids lacking in it in their home life. Anyone who thinks that a teacher salary of 46K (the FL average) is too much for the responsibility or education involved is at the heart of the problem, which starts with our criminal governor and state legislature.

This year, I had to buy 2 reams of printing paper and dry-erase markers for the white board for my 1st grader, among other random classroom items.
Since when are things like this part of the school supply list? Teachers aren't buying their supplies. They are having the parents do it.

The facts do not support you, teachers are overpaid and that's just fact.

The average teacher working in a public school today receives total compensation roughly 52 percent higher than what he or she would receive in private-sector employment. In that sense, the teacher is, indeed, "overpaid."

The average private sector employee wouldn't last three days as a teacher. There is something to be said for being able to use the rest room when you want to, not having to deal with kids with head lice, and all sorts of lovely things teachers deal with.
