Don't take this as negative, but I am just wondering why you wouldn't try to find a job first? Is there a specific reason? Wouldn't it be worth it to at least try? You can certainly go forward with moving down here, but I am curious why you wouldn't try to send out resumes or make some phone calls ahead of time. It couldn't hurt.

Do you have kids?

annerk, I know you want to give sound advice but I know for a fact you are 100% wrong about truck driver salaries in Orlando. Go to any job board and show me that there isn't 13-16 starting wage for truck driving. My friend works for Fedex frieght in Orlando and makes 19.50 an hour top rate is 21.50. No where in the country do truck drivers make 9.00 an hour. make small package stuff but what I drive you don't make that kind of money. Please just positive responses from now on. Curious annerk.. what is your occupation?

Until a month ago when I changed jobs, I was the fleet manager for a company with 75 medium duty diesel trucks. Need to know more? I know how much we were paying drivers, and they started at $9 an hour, regardless of their experience. They got stop and bonus pay, but it wasn't guaranteed, and if they had an accident or complaint, they lost all stop and bonus pay for the month.

i don't know a thing about trucking or trucks...but mossball, you are speaking of a fedex truck which I know can be quite large, how does that compare to a "medium duty diesel" truck?

I have 15 years experience in New York. I deliver fuel to gas stations and small buisness. I make 24.00 an hour plus I usually work about 10-12 hours 5 days a week. Not bad but I really want to be in Florida. In Orlando I'm hoping to make about at least 13 to start. My wife hopefully 8-10. This is not being realistic? Or will we be on the streets soon. God I hope not.

Actually we didn't. We had a lot of safe drivers. I should clarify by adding "at-fault" in front of the word accident. We also promoted heavily from within, and one guy that started as a driver was a mid-level manager after five years making almost $100K a year. The bad ones didn't cut it, the good ones were rewarded.

medium trucks are probably straight trucks(large box trucks) or pups(small trailers) I drive 48-53 foot tractor trailer.

OK, if you have a class A CDL with a hazmat endorsement you'll make in the $12-20 range, but there aren't many local delivery jobs around here for that type of truck. You'd need to do overnights. But jobs like that are pretty scarce right now. People are buying less of everything, so retailers are ordering less, so there is less to ahve to deliver.

I would not come to Florida without a job lined up. Period.
