I would just leave it be if i still had the old electric meter but the new smart meters dont miss a beat. My avg summer bill would be around $6.00 but now with the new meter it will be at least 4xs that or even more. Im turning it off cause its driving me nuts & its noisy. Ill see if the electric company can help get me a new one for free considering im broke.
Pull it out and clean out all the dust bunnies that have accumulated. You might get lucky and find that all it needs is a little air to do it's job. I would certainly do this before calling a repairperson.
I turned it off at midnight & turned it back on at 7 am. Its still cold inside the fridge (water i put in freezer is ice cold but not frozen) so ill just turn it off at bedtime until i can get it replaced which wont be for awhile.
One more thing you can do [maybe?] is in the freezer, unscrew the screws and take the floor out and see if there is a big accumulation of ice in there, or water, if you check it after it's unplugged. Get that out if there is. There is a drain hole in the back on ours, this gets plugged with ice and it won't work right, so we have to get that ice out and then flush it out so it flows through there properly.
We have a Whirlpool, and had to call the repair people so many times that the last time, the guy showed us how to do this ourselves. Refrigerators aren't built to last anymore. I would rather buy an OLD one than a new one, really, except for the energy efficiency of new ones. Think about the refrigerators our parents or grandparents had, they lasted forever.

Agreed. The exact same thing happened to me Steel7, except this happened in the dead of winter, and that fridge was running almost full tilt. Water had accumulated on the floor when I pulled the fridge out. I went right down to Sears and got a new one. And the electric bill-yegads, it was 50% over what it usually is at that time of the year (December). Got an energy efficient Kenmore, it runs like a top, and my electric bill has been consistently 20% lower than before (I save my past bills for comparision).
I moved the fridge & no water anywhere. Im pretty sure its the thermostat switch. It just runs & runs & runs. The fridge used to kick on every 15 mins for about 10 mins. I know this cause its abit noisy & according to the power company its normal to run every 15 mins & not 24 hrs a day. My bill is going to sky rocket.
Defrost problem is not likely or I would have mentioned it. If you only pay 6 bucks a months that's incredible even if you only run a light bulb.
With the fridge running 24/7 i expect it to jump to at least 24.00 mo to just run the fridge. My daily kwh usage has doubled from 4 to 8 since july 1st. Im just going to turn the fride off in the evenings around 6 or 7 pm & turn it back on around 7 am. It should still be cold & safe to do.....right ?
Turning it on and off sounds like a plan till u figure out what is going on. Good luck
