According to this modern refridgerators run 30 mins a hr. My fridge is 16 yrs old & wont stop running (just started 2 days ago). Its sucking up power usage. I dont believe a 1996 fridge is considered modern & any ideas why it wont stop running (compressor is on) ? When it rains it pours in my life. It is about 90 degrees inside my home (if that matters or not).

Condensor clogged up or just too hot in your house..... Other than that the thermostat would have to be stuck on! This is assuming you're sure the compressor is continuously running.

I had my temp setting just above the off position. I now set it close to 1 with 5 being coldest. Did i have the setting too low ? Read the info about thermostat. Its now 83 degrees inside. I can manually turn the fridge off if i have to. Thanks.

Well yes! If it's too hot in your house your refrigerator might be incapable of achieving the temp you have set. I assumed you've tried changing the thermostat setting to make it cut off. Turn it to a warmer setting certainly. If it won't cut off at any setting my first post applies! The hotter it is in your house the more important it is that your condenser is clean. If your condenser is clogged the fridge won't get as cold. But, the compressor has a safety overload which should cut it off. It resets in a couple minutes or so..

Remember there's a freezer control and a refrigerator control. Be sure it's the one with an off position you're adjusting.

I live in a uninsulated mobile home where its a oven in the summer & a ice box in the winter. Luckily winters arent too bad cause i live in ca but summers are brutal. My cooler is not working right at the moment so its nasty inside here during the day.

The fridge is nice & cold but the condensor is hot & abit noisy. Its 15 yrs old so im not surprised. I set the themostat at 1 & pulled the fridge out so i can look at the coils, etc. I cleaned everything but its still running. Should i set it higher to maybe 2 or 3 ? The dial says 3 is normal setting.

Compressor is a motor, the condenser is a cooling coil much like the radiator on your car. There is a coil usually under the fridge. Remove the kick plate. If there is no radiator looking contraption on the back. Look underneath. If you see a tine cover tubing array and it's dirty ...clean it. This will cause the compressor to run hot. This may keep it from maintaining the temp you have set. If your freezer is keeping everything frozen then you probably have a stuck thermostat. You could try thumping the thermostat with a knife handle or such. If the compressor quits that's it. If you're just hearing fans running you may not have a problem.

Turn the knob towards the "off" position! Yes Mobile homes are horrible for refrigerators.

I have a estate fridge by whirlpool. Its still running since my last post & the freezer compartment is fine even though i only have 6 ice cubes trays & a frozen pack of hot dogs in it. This is soo annoying.

Put more in it !!
Fill water jugs with water and place in freezer! The more there is to hold the cold the longer off cycles will be!! Water in fridge side too! Side by Side or Top freezer?? N/M must be top freezer if coil was on the back. Every time you open the door to that 90 degrees it's starting all over.
