Us Yanks used to use chum they same way, for whatever reason you never hear it anymore to describe a buddy or close friend.

No- it's rare here too.

It's a shame how some words go out of fashion, or hijacked to mean something else.

Here in America, I remember the word Chum being used to describe a fish used for bait to fish for larger fish. Does that make sense? Of course my friend is my chum too.
