I'm not this old... but the first cowboy was in Florida. The first horse and the first cow was brought to the "New World" by Ponce DeLeon... therefore the first cowboy was in Florida.
The word 'cracker' is from whip used to 'herd' cattle.

I'm so old I can remember when "Cowboy" was an insult, it meant a horse thief, robber, or outlaw. (in fact, the Clanton Gang was called the “Cowboys", and there was also the Cochise County Cowboys, another infamous gang of outlaws.)
Those who raised cattle were generally called herders or ranchers. Or ranch hand, range hand or trail hand. Never "cowboy".

In Florida they're called crackers or cow hunters.
