Remember "children's numbers" so houses could have one phone that was flat rate to your own and immediately adjoining towns, two units for other local towns and one phone that was "message rate" that a larger area that was one message unit for as long as you talked?

I think it was called exchange prefix? I know it was called something.

here in NYC, it had changed to all numbers some time in the 60's I believe, since we moved to Staten Island in 66, and the telephone number was the 3 numbers....
NYC kept letters in the directory until 1977 but was not giving out new lettered phone numbers after the late 60's. One of my friends moved to Armonk in 1968 or 1969 and he got ARmonk 3-3367 and 58 as the children's number.

Since 1972, when SSA began assigning SSN s and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, MD , the area number has been assigned based on the ZIP code of the mailing address provided on the application for the original Social Security card. The applicant's mailing address may not be the same as the place of residence.

It's happening today too, if you ask nicely. No gifts, though.

Donation to charity started with the lowest amount. Now it seems like it’s the opposite direction.

Yeah I remember when you didn't have to know a foreign language in order to get a job in the United States of America - unless you were in the State department or the military.

I can remember when being an astronaut was a big thing. They even had a camp where you could pretend to be an astronaut, right down to wearing a diaper (fecal containment unit, I think it was called).

It's amazing how many non-profits and political organizations think I should remember them in my will.

And it's amazing how many phone calls are coming from the 202 area code these days.
