The Moon Landing (July 20, 1969). I was 9 years old. Was playing ping pong in the back yard of a friend's home when his father insisted we interrupt the game to see this landmark event. Was thankful that he did so. Was a refreshing and positive break from the Vietnam War and urban riot news coverage that was so prevalant in that decade.
The Mary Tyler Moore sitcom (1970-1977). We did not have a TV at our Minnesota lake vacation cabin the first few years. Kept ourselves entertained in the evening with card games, especially cribbage, also Yahtzee and board games. When this show started, my Mom insisted that Dad have one there. She really liked that show and eventually the rest of the family did, too.
The Partridge Family sitcom (1970-1974). I liked the humor from their band manager, played by actor Dave Madden. My sister had a crush on David Cassidy.
Laugh-in with Rowan & Martin (1968-1973). My parents loved this comedy skit show.
The Beatles (in the 1960's/early 1970's my sister and I had a babysitter that would bring her Beatles records over and play their music. I remember she was very depressed when they broke up).
Several other TV shows as well...Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, The Wild, Wild West, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillies, etc.
The following are probably familiar only to those in the Twin Cities (MN) and the Bay Area (CA) respectively:
TC/Bridgeman's ice cream. Thought it was absolutely delicious when I was a child in Minnesota. Going to Dairy Queen on occasion was a downgrade (and a little easier on my parent's budget), but still appreciated.
BA/Creature Features on Saturday late at night with host Bob Wilkins. This show featuring horror movies, usually the cult type, and interviews with people in the horror movie industry, ran in the Bay Area from 1971-1984. Wilkins would often smoke a cigar while doing his presentation and interviews. That would have been banned today. He also had a great sense of humor!
