buying stereo components. You started with a pair of speakers and, usually, a turntable. Then you could add another set of speakers, or a receiver.
If/when you wanted to upgrade, just get rid of the old speakers or turntable and get better ones.
I still do that, but it is definitely a dying practice. It turned out that the loss of sound quality in my living room setup was not just due to aging hearing, but also due to deteriorating speakers. The speakers were replaced; but the tinnitus and high frequency loss are not so easily fixed.
I remember... when you hit a certain age the car seat goes to Goodwill, not when you hit a certain size and any sooner makes you a terrible parent like it is today.
I was riding in the backseat of my mom's van with NO carseat, no airbags, an AM radio and only a lap seatbelt by age 3! (Oh yeah, and the huge gap between the seat and the sliding door. I don't think you could get away with that today.) Why am I still alive today? To say nothing about my predecessors who grew up before seatbelts existed!
Then again, our school busses didn't have seatbelts either and to this day I still don't think they do. I know the city's public busses certainly don't. As a kid that always struck me as a little strange and actually still sort of does.

Not to far into the future.. School Buses will have seat belts.. and possibly the seats facing towards the rear. The Bus Driver will be responsible for all to buckle up..
I remember when CCleaner, the computer utility, was called "Crap Cleaner". They changed the name to "CCleaner" several years ago for esthetic reasons and to reach a broader customer base.
