I'm so old I remember...

When house paint had lead.. interior & exterior
When French Fries tasted really good..
When Ground Beef had a great taste..
When Candy & Pop had real sugar in them...
When you only had one choice... for " Butter" BUTTER ! .. You did have Oleo lard in a bag with a dye pellet you broke.
When you had only 3 flavors of Ice Cream Vanilla - Strawberry - Chocolate came in 1 gallon cardboard cans. 128 ounces
When you bought Fried Chicken at KFC the dinner Box Taters - Gravy- Coleslaw- Breast - Wing - Leg and Glass Bottle of Coke.. $1.98 as I remember.. bring the bottle back for a nickel off next meal.

Default I'm so old I remember.................

In my last 3 years of grade school, the grade school (1944' 1945 & 1946) that I attended finally instituted a Bus Route for the kids that lived out in the "boonies" (6 miles for me). The Bus driver was the local retired Justice of the Peace and the local Game Warden and a family friend of my family..........my Dad had passed away when I was 13 and he (the Bus driver) was "just a nice guy" and kinda looked out for me in a very passive way. He knew I loved to hunt Ducks every time I could and was glad to help me out whenever he could.
As I have previously mentioned, I lived and grew up in a house that was right on the shore of a lake that had 3 separate areas of "bull rushes" right along the shore line in a 1/2 mile stretch of shore line between my house and a bridge that went over a small channel where I could tie the canoe off out of sight, and catch the school bus... There were only about 6 houses on the lake that were lived in year round.
So when the conditions were right during duck season (very foggy and calm), I would leave my house in the canoe just about 15 minutes before legal shooting time and slowly and quietly ease into the area of the first bunch of bull rushes and flush (usually about 5 or 6 Mallards) and if I did my job, I 'd drop one or two.
I'd then proceed on down the lake shore to the next batch of bull rushes and repeat.
The timing of my "system" was such that i'd be able to get to the bridge about 10 minutes before when the bus would be there. I had a place to tie the canoe out of sight, put the ducks in a cooler, put the shotgun in a case and get up the bank to the gravel road and wait for the bus.
My agreement with the bus driver was to leave the gun and ducks with him......give him 1/2 of what i'd shot if he wanted them,....he'd dress them out and I would pick them up from him on the bus on the afternoon ride home to the bridge.
This situation might occur maybe 8 times a season.
Remember this was in the latter stages of WWII and every little bit of help with "the groceries" helped my Mom out.
The ducks plus the rabbits and squirrels I routinely got really cut down on Mom's meat bill.

Default ......before the advent of TV back in the late 1930s and through the 1940s!

Jack Armstrong....
Terry and The Pirates
Little Orphan Annie
Dick Tracey
The Lone Ranger

We could pick them on an old Philco radio, on stations WLS or maybe it was WGN, out of Chicago.

Does anyone remember the show “Queen For A Day”? It must have been the 1950s. I have a vague memory of plump older housewives, reciting some sob story about their lives and being lavished with gifts.

Even at my young age, which must have been under 10, I felt like it was undignified and embarrassing.

I loved those. My father's '63 Chevy had them. I don't remember when they were phased out.
