Some mothers show more than others but generally speaking an observer will not see anything at all. Certainly not anything close to what they could see in the Victoria's Secret poster at the mall store. Which one is considered too vulgar for public display?

That's the real kicker. When I go out to eat at a nice restaurant, there are plenty of women with low cut gowns/blouses, showing WAY more than what I show when I breastfeed. Now, I could see how a selfish man would say that they would obviously prefer to see the slit down to there on the woman who is not breastfeeding but displaying her cleavage - but even more mind boggling to me is when women do the same thing. Really?

Not everyone.

It's not just the husband. A lot of women feel this way too...they just don't feel sexy anymore while they are breastfeeding. And we all know that if the woman doesn't feel sexy, the hubby ain't getting lucky!
There are a lot of things involved in parenting an infant that are not very sexy. Dirty diapers, spit up, sleep deprivation, little time for showers and grooming, etc. It's not exactly the sexiest time in one's life despite how they decide to feed their baby.

Dirty diapers, spit up, sleep deprivation and little time for showers and grooming have little to do with how a woman feels toward her husband in a sexual way.

Really? Do you speak for all women?

Also, do those who think that breastfeeding makes women feel un-sexy know for sure that all women feel that way about it?

The heck they don't! It isn't just about how the woman feels about the man, it's also how the woman feels about herself. Being awakened every 2-3 hours during the night to get up and feed a baby (whether it's nursing or bottle feeding) is no fun. Add to that not being able to take a nap during the day to catch up, and you'll find that some women may not be in the mood for reasons that have everything to do with caring for a baby but not necessarily just about nursing.

Dorothy, no one cares how you feel about your husband. No one cares about whether or not you feel sexy when you breastfeed. Most people really don't want to know. Most people would feel this falls under the category of Too Much Information.

The issue is public breastfeeding, in the USA. Not private breastfeeding, not womens' breasts in general.

The general consensus among people who don't breastfeed in public (which is most people, since most people aren't breastfeeding at all, since most people aren't women who have children and breasts that are lactating), in the USA, is that the act of a woman's nipple being sucked on in public, by ANYONE, brings up sexual feelings, whether intended or not, by the person witnessing said suckage. This sexual feeling is incongruous, and therefore discomforting and UN-pleasant, to those who acknowledge that breastfeeding is not a sexual thing.

Because of this unpleasant sexual feeling that people get when they see a woman's nipple being sucked in public (whether or not said nipple is visible is neither here nor there, it has nothing to do with the issue because the issue is the sucking, not the exposed (or not) nipple)...because of this feeling, we, the uncomfortable, wish to state that it is uncomfortable. And that the sucking in public is creepy. It's creepy, because it brings up sexual feelings among those of us who are not presently experiencing this lovely beautiful mundane natural ordinary experience, and are only capable of reacting hormonally, which is to say, getting sexually charged by the idea that a woman's nipple is currently being sucked on, in public.

Are you grasping this yet?

To me, It's not the act of seeing a boob in public. I could really care less about all that and think everyone should become nudists. I think its the whole fact that a baby is sucking on a woman's nipple for food. I don't want to see that in public. Breast feeding should be private IMO. It makes me very uncomfortable. You may say "go somewhere else" but what if I go somewhere else and someone else is breast feeding?

If the act of a lactating woman having her nipple sucked on in public is such a wonderful natural thing that no one should think twice about...

then why not invite dad to have a suck on the other nipple, while you're all out having Family Day at the mall?

There's plenty of milk to spare, afterall. How about offering some to the sales guy at the Verizon booth?

It's a natural thing afterall.

Or, does modesty prevent you from offering? Is that it? Is it that milking your child is a personal thing and you don't want to share it with anyone else? Then here's the answer: stop sharing it with everyone else. Because when you do it in public, that is exactly what you're doing. Except, no one else gets to benefit from the sharing. So you're being selfish. You're saying HEY I AM LACTATING AND YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY!

Isn't that loving and natural and caring of you? You get a gold star.

Tell that to sparksharp. She is the one who brought this topic up.

Get over it. That is how babies eat.

No one wants to hear about your sexual arousal when you see babies nursing in public. TMI!
