I have spent the last 2 days building a papier-mâché elephant with my son, and baking tons of cupcakes. Doesn't get more exciting than that!
Hey, those are the good things in life!
Both my boys wanted pinatas for their bday this yr after going to some bday parties that had them this past summer. My dh went to the store w/ the boys & his AMEX card (a BAD BAD combination) & came home w/ 2 pinatas (both bdays are very close) that in the end cost $50. He had no idea that a pinata could be made quite simply & probably much more fun.
He proceeded to hide the $40 worth of candy he bought to fill up the pinatas (I ended up returning half of it much to his chagrin.)
I remember making a Helen of Troy horse for a school project w/ my dad back in junior high.
We just popped popcorn for the first time with our popcorn popper we got for Christmas. I thought it was going to be a waste of cupboard space but it's actually quite awesome.

Aren't those memories the best? In CA you make a mission in the 4th grade. (There were a string of Catholic missions built in the 1700's in CA.) Making the mission is a rite of passage.

Wait...like a little mission to take to school or do you have to go out and build and actual mission.
Yes - the missions! Actually 4th grade is pretty typically when you study your state's history. I remember (and still have in a box somewhere) my "Ohio Notebook" - we lived in Ohio when I was in 4th grade. When my younger sister was in 4th grade we lived in California - so Missions, Father Junipero Serra etc etc (although I believe they are focusing on the Missions than Father Serra at this point).

Little mission. First you learn about Father Serra who built the missions. Then you get on the bus and take a field trip to a mission. (San Jan Capistrano's is very cool.) Then you go home and find a shoe box and build your own little mission. Lots of paper mache. When I was a kid they all looked droopy and out-of-proportion. Nowadays, with the advent of helicopter parents, they become major productions. You can even get "mission kits" in the craft stores in CA it's such a big deal.

Anybody want some popcorn?
I need to put at least 50% butter on it right about now...
