...would you be able to move forward and be happy? Say you have three children and the oldest and your only daughter or son kills himself / herself. Would you be able to forgive him or her? What if your child had a history of suicide attempts and suffered from depression even after many years of therapy, medication and having nothing work?
If you know someone who has lost their child through suicide, how long did it take afterwards from them to heal?

What if the child was a burden financially and emotionally?
I think no matter how much of a burden my child is I would never get over their death.
Though my first daughter died because she was born early how I always respond to the "how are you handling it" question is: The pain is there and as strong as ever but I have learned to hide it better.

Do you have children? Of course a parent is never going to get over it. He or she may move on, but the pain will be there always. A child's death may generate all kinds of feelings, including guilt, fear, anger, relief, sorrow, and so on--not just one emotion, and certainly not for a period of time that anyone can define. Suicide is all the more complicated because the victim and perpetrator are the same person, so you can't even direct your anger in a satisfying way. No matter what the reason for the child's death or how old he or she is, and no matter what other emotions may be present, I think most any parent would feel deep pain from the loss of a child.
