Thanks for all the replies. I would like to address replies in a general fashion at this point vs. quoting several people, to keep it simple.

We are bound by a lease here until August so the only way we can leave early is to pay double rent for part of the summer. We are working on hopefully moving to the new town by at least July, or maybe even June but I don't think we can do it any earlier than that, unfortunately, for financial reasons. We do NOT want to wait until August for many reasons -- primarily because we'd like for everyone to be settled and somewhat organized before school starts back up.

So, there wouldn't be much of a chance for him to do summer things there but it was a good suggestion. We'll see what happens with whatever time we do have there before school starts though.

What I am going to do for now is see if there is some sort of activity in the other town that he could participate in on a more limited basis (like once a week) since I could just drive him there once a week.. I'm already driving back and for now anyway for my classes. That along with a tour of the school as soon as possible.

Going forward with a positive attitude about this and letting go of my own anxiety will make this easier for everyone and I appreciate the replies from people who understand my protective/mommy fears. Change is always scary huh? I just keep trying to think back to my own moves in childhood (major move at 9/10, then again at 14) and realize that I managed fine even though I was not excited about it at all when it happened!

She is actually really excited. She tends to be, of course, influenced by the attitude the rest of us have about something that is going on so that is part of it. We've taken her to the town (just drove around a bit) and she's seen people swimming in the river, and she has noticed the hills there, etc., which she seemed to like. We hope to do more summer / river stuff there before we actually move and just spend some fun time there in general until we can actually make the move.

Hopefully this school change will be good for her. She doesn't really care for the long term sub she has now, and I've heard nothing but good stuff about all the elementary schools there so far. I am expecting a more organized learning environment for her after the move. At this point the only really good thing about her current school is familiarity.

The biggest advantage is that she is very extroverted so she is much more likely to get to know other kids quickly (she's the only extrovert in this household!) It's also good because there are a few therapists who specialize in her particular issues and they all seem to be located in Austin, Round Rock, etc., so we'll be closer to those options.
