I was a single mom with three sons. What I made at my job was a drop in the bucket compared to what the teachers earned. I saved empty coffee cans, covered them with Christmas paper, filled them with home-made cookies and always got the nicest thank you notes.
My late dtr-in-law was a teacher and received many lovely gifts, many of which she re-gifted. She was far more pleased with home made baked goods or candy or a hand-made card from the student.
As for the wine, if I could have afforded it, I would have drunk it myself!

This gag isn't really new. My Wife's a teacher. She's received bottle of wine with the photo of student and same "my child is why you drink" phrase posted on the bottle. In the last 3-4 years, we've gotten maybe 3-4 of them.
Needless to say we get a kick out of it and drink the bottle. I didn't know it was newsworthy as I guess we could have broke the story several years ago
Usually most gifts are a hand-made card, some flowers or trinket and a gift card in the $25-50 range. Alcohol is rare, but some parent usually gives some. She hates coffee I probably end up with $200-300 worth of dunkin donuts gift cards, and I typically hand most out to homeless persons I see in my travels.

After seeing here and other social media so many teachers HATING getting gifts from students, I have totally stopped. I always thought I was making a nice gesture and teaching my kids to give and think of others...but to a lot of teachers its like the worst thing someone could do to them LOL

I don’t know any teacher who “hates” getting gifts from their students. Sometimes its a bit awkward, but I still appreciate that my students’ families thought of me during the holidays.
