This is my (grand) niece. We have a large family so it's a large party. First
child for my niece. My niece is 26 now and the birthday girl will be 1. She has a doting set of grandparents on the paternal side and they buy her a lot.
Buy her some clothes; children that young do not know the difference between clothes and a toy but, the parent will and probably be glad she doens't have another toy for which to find room!
If the child has plenty to wear - buy a savings bond.
Some type of "push toy" is the first thing that comes to my mind. Or conversely, a "pull toy" where they pull the toy along and it usually makes a little noise as it goes. The one I'm thinking about is called a "corn popper." Corn popper is common, though. Might duplicate with that one, but there are many push/pull toys. Many things out there to choose from, but at age one, those were some that my son really enjoyed it seemed.
A deposit to start or add to a savings account;
Books - a child can never have too many books;
one of my favorites - an annual pass to the kids museum in the area or the zoo.
Savings bond and a smallish toy of some kind...wrapped very elaborate (bright with bows). All the fun at that age is in the tearing of the paper anyway.
A book and add one each year- My daughter was given the Miss Spider's Tea Party series from her godmother-make sure you sign and date it also!!
I think the pas to the zoo is the best idea ever!!
A small baby doll, not large. About 6 inches tall, usually these dolls do not have hair.
My daughter loved her "little garden", this is a plastic garden, can fit in corner of family room, small area they can walk around, look in mail box. plant plastic flowers, not clutter.
Books! Books! Good Night Moon, Baby Blue Cat Says "NO" (they LOVE this book, and shout NO on every page!
At that age my kids loved stacking rings (on the rocking pole thing), a baby doll as suggested above, the "corn popper" which will drive mom a little crazy, and stacking cups (which are fun in the bath, too!). Gosh I miss those days...
I love the suggestions for a zoo pass and/or savings bond too though.
