Being a parent is hard work. As Moms we are faced with some really difficult decisions. Staying at home can mean loss of income, retirement earnings, independence. It can also be isolating if Mom doesn't know other sahm's or have support of friends and family. Wohm's have to trust their child in the care of someone else, figure out how to manage coordinating different schedules, getting everyone out the door in time and running the household. Neither choice is really that great. After having my dd I wished that there was a job out there where I could bring dd with me. I missed working but didn't want to leave dd. No matter what, we are left with some really difficult choices and limited options. If we could just stop attacking each other for a minute, maybe we could come up with some solutions.

Thank you! ITA!!

I personally would like to see a much longer maternity leave provided for new moms. Why can other countries like England do it (whole 1 year of maternity leave) and we can't? We only get maximum of 3 months here in USA!

Socialism!! Several European countries have much better maternity leaves than we do. It's too bad. We are supposed to be the greatest country in the world, but in may ways, we are not.

I agree, and I think there should be paternity leave also. 3 months is pretty much the most employers in the US will allow for maternity leave, and even most of that is unpaid...I think paid maternity leave is only about 6 weeks at the most.

Motherhood doesn't equal martyrdom. You can say its a crock all you want but some of us aren't automatic moms. We try hard and we love our kids. But we are not June Cleaver and there is nothing wrong with that.

My kids ARE good kids but they are KIDS. They are rambunctious, they like to play and they like time with Mommy. If you can't (or won't) understand that it's easier and more efficient to get things done without the kids under foot, that's your deal not mine.

Some parents can't do this. Know why? BECAUSE THEY ARE HUMAN.

What is with some people that can't understand that all people are different? That different roads can lead to the same end: happy, well adjusted children.
Agreed!

I'm all for longer maternity leaves & paternity leave. The question remains...who's going to PAY for it??? You'll have the same people complaining that they are paying via taxes for other people to sit at home with their kids. You'll have childless folks complaining that they shouldn't have to pay for someone else to choose to have kids. I can see all the arguments now. We want government out of our lives, no funding social programs yet all families should have a SAHP and taxes should pay for long maternity leaves?

The military family support services provides such a service, once a month, to the parent left behind during a deployment. Its called "give parents a break", and its available to any parent who has a deployed spouse. Its usually on Saturdays for about 6 hours and if you want to go home and sleep for 5 hours while your kids are at the daycare center or youth center, you can. If you want to get Christmas shopping done, you can; clean your house? go to Sam's and stock up? get a manicure? whatever you want. No one judges. As a matter of fact one mom was dropping off her baby and kids at the same time as I was and mentioned how she finally was going to get her entire house clean all at once and the care provider told her she should go see a movie and take a nap or do something for herself to relax.

Really, you cannot judge whether someone needs a break or not and what constitutes a break. Not everyone has a supportive spouse or family that allows them a break when they are stressed out, even if that spouse or family is right there.

I use a moms day out drop off for my 2 yr old for doctor appts for my other kids and myself, but I also use it to take time to sit in a coffee shop and study for my class, or *gasp* go to Costco or the commissary all by myself.

To me, a working parent who takes a day or half-day off from work and leaves their child at day care so they can get something done is not doing anything different from me using the moms day out.

I am sure the OP will tell me I am flying off the handle and freaking out about her comments, SOP for when someone disagrees with her.

I agree. 3 months is way too short.

The government does not provide paid maternity leave. Your job either does or doesn't. In my case I was allowed to use my vacation/sick leave if I desired to recieve a paycheck during that time. After 6 weeks, I went back to work. It was difficult but we all survived, my kids grew up healthy, happy and well adjusted.

exactly what I was thinking. The "family values" folks that think we should all stay home are the same ones complaining about taxes and "welfare."

true. and the 6-8 weeks of pay that most get is "disability" to recover from the birth.
