My oldest: I'm not sure he ever learned ? I know he rode with training wheels when he was younger, but he was never really into it and he never wanted to ride a bike
Middle: around age 10
Youngest: by 5

They all had different levels of comfort. My youngest still rides a bike whenever she can. The other two never do.

I know this is older thread but some might still want info.

Someone told me this truck and it worked for my extremely clumsy and in coordinated 6 year old. He wanted his training wheels off but did not feel confident so it wasn't working well. He was also not the bravest kid, always very careful.

So I took him to a softball field with a diamond that has the soft fine gravel. It keeps bike from going too fast and a softer landing than hard surface. It took just two short sessions and he was riding with out training wheels.

Both of mine were riding on their own at four. Neither ever had training wheels. Balance bikes are the greatest invention.

My IEP, Resource Room son finally got it when he was about 9 years old. His friends ripped off his training wheels and wouldn't let him come home until he could balance. They held his bike and ran while he peddled.

We should all have friends like that.

I think my dad took the training wheels off on my fifth birthday, and I was fine. The bike we all learned on was way too big for us, though. We could have ridden sooner with a smaller bike.

I've bought 3 wheel bikes to my son and my daughter when they were 3, when they were 6, they could already ride bikes without training wheels. I remember how I tought my daughter to ride a bike and she couldn't cope with fear for a long time, but after some trainings we finally did it.

There is nothing complicated in it - the main thing is to choose a good bike. We also wondered how to teach our 3 year old son to ride a bike safely. I recommend starting with pedal-less bicycles designed for young kids. This will help the child learn basic riding skills.
