Davros - what do you enjoy doing? Have you joined groups with your interests? There's SO many groups/clubs/blah blah here, I can't imagine there's not something for you to enjoy. Unless of course you're completely anti-social .

When I graduated college, I moved to Pittsburgh and eventually lived in the Shadyside/ Oakland area. Being 24, everyone my age was a student. Dating was hard because when guys your age find out you're not a student, they look at you like you're an alien from another planet. Well, technically I am to most people in Pittsburgh, being from Michigan.

I've been volunteering a little. All of my fellow volunteers were either retirees, college students, and maybe 4 married 40/50-somethings. I did have to quit that particular volunteering because of a personal conflict with the "head" volunteers there, but I am looking for more opportunites.

As for hobbies, my interests are kind of wierd, and I do tend to resist social activies. It's easy to just stay home and watch TV, surf the net, or do "homework" for my job. Those few activities I have done (politics, folk music concerts) have been populated mostly by retirees and students. None of these people were interested in talking to me. I said a few things to some of them, but most of the people just smiled back without saying anything. I have only one acquaintance outside of work that's a neighbor. He talks to everybody, so he talks to me too. But that's it. We aren't friends, just talk occasionally. He's a rare breed of person around here, in my opinion, because everybody else seems to mostly keep to themselves, even when doing activities. Most of my neighbors barely even say hi back, and kind of look a little shocked that anyone would say hello. Many of my neighbors I only see about once every couple months. It's wierd. I've never lived anywhere like that where you don't even see your next door neighbors in an entire month. My co-workers have zero interest in doing activities with me, except a couple of us do something together maybe twice per year. The rest of the time they are just hanging around with their families or other friends, and I don't belong in those groups. It's almost as if they want to make sure I never, ever see them.

I kind of get the impression from adults State College that if you don't already belong in a group, you are never going to be let in. They don't like newcomers. It seems people here became friends back in their Penn State days, and if you weren't their friend in college, you can forget about ever being their friend. Fact is, most people here who aren't in college seem to spend 100% of their time on work, TV, hunting/fishing, and family.

You mention all kinds of clubs here in State College. To be perfectly honest with you, I am not aware of any clubs except for bluegrass "jams" and I can't play bluegrass. What kind of clubs were you talking about ? Outing clubs ? Politics clubs ? Birding clubs ??? I don't do church because I don't believe in God. How do you find these clubs here ??? I didn't get the impression that there really were any.

You're probably right. The real problem is probably my being so introverted, but I really am curious about these "clubs" you say exist here.

Yeah, I guess dating and socializing are hard everywhere. I have been too whiny in this
thread, including in the post above this one.

Are there other parts of Pittsburgh that have more young professionals ?

Yeah. I didn't take advantage of those opportunities. I was too "busy" and scared. Stupid. But I'll never get those years back.

I swear I replied to this earlier, here goes again.

The RVOC he listed is great...they have at least 2 hikes a week, that I know of. My neighbor is in the running club....and it seems to be a very active group. Watch the things to do in the CDT, lots of groups are listed.

I've got to disagree on them not being accepting, since this is such a transient town. It depends on where you are though. I will say, it seems most have their own circles set up, and it is difficult to find a circle that one can fit into.

Good luck!

That's what I meant. You said it better.
