Turkeys are very common in the Pittsburgh suburbs- almost a nuisance. Deer as well, but thats well known. 'Haven't seen any bears yet, though there was a stray out in Monroeville last year. Yikes!

Trust me, the elk look cute and cuddly until you get close to them. Then you realize that each of them probably wigh 200+ pounds, in that picture there were about 15 elk that my wife and i had just seen on the side of the road while driving. Elk Scenic Drive. They are descendants of 177 rocky mountain elk introduced from colorado to pennsylvania in 1920's, i guess all the native ones were hunted to extinction. Usually you cant hunt them, only for a select time in a select area. This was taken between Driftwood and Dent's Run and near Shinnemahoning and Renovo. We just pulled over in a flat area and then got out and slowly cautiosly approached, i'd say i was about maybe 10 to 20 feet away from some of them. they were pretty peaceful, just grazing, looking at me, then eating again. i took several pictures, ive never seen anything like that before. So that was pretty fun. eventually, the closer i tried to walk the more they'd move, so i wasnt able to get any real good shots or shots of us next to them. finally i gave up and left them be.

Default more wildlife pictures

here are some more pictures, the first two are from the elk in renovo, the second two are the famous wild ponies of assateaugue island in maryland. that was also a pretty cool trip where you could go right up to them and pet them. the problem is that the island is overrun with deer who are monopolizing the limited resources of the island and causing he ponies to decline. they remove several deer and ponies a year because of over grazing.
