That's fine. Nor would I. But as a retired military guy, I thought the way you worded that was BS.

Not everyone grovels at the feet of the military, dude. Get over it. Some people want to live in a place that is more stable. Not a place full of mostly renters where people are moving in and out every couple of years (military towns).

I want to clear up a misconception though regarding Pensacola vs. Tallahassee.

Although the city of Tallahassee is significantly more populated than the city of Pensacola, Pensacola has a larger metro area. I would also say that Pensacola feels more like a big city than Tallahassee does. Also, the aesthetics of Pensacola pale in comparison to Tallahassee.

I'm not sure where you got "grovels" from. I'm just asking to not disrespect the people who choose to serve our country by lumping them in a big pile. You wouldn't be happy if I did that with some other group would you?

You just lumped them into a big pile by saying that they are "people who choose to serve our country". Not everyone in the military is there because they want to "serve our country". I, for one, don't even believe that today's version of the US military does serve our country. But, that's neither here nor there. I just don't like seeing military types get all whiny when people say anything negative about the military or living in an area that is dominated by military personnel.

Just realize one thing, you'll never, ever know what it's like to serve or why people do serve. You'll just reap the benefits of those who do.

"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." - Winston Churchill

If the US military was actually used to defend Americans, then that would be one thing. Wake up dude!

I lived in Pensacola 20 years ago, can anyone tell me is it still a nice place to live? I loved the small (compared to where I now live) town feel and the beach was beautiful. My wife wants to move to FL and we have a 7 yr old so I am concerned with schools, safety and available activities. We are also considering the Atlantic coast for surfing (Melbourne) but I think the area is too busy and congested. We want a quiet community, a simple life, and to be near the water. Can anyone recommend other cities similar to Pensacola (not too tourist-y, overcrowded, transient)?

Try Tallahassee. You can save your insurance money and make day trips to the beach.

I would visit both cities and see which one you like more. Pensacola is a military town, but it's big enough that you don't feel overwhelmed by the military-town culture. I've spent some time in Tally and I really don't think one city is any nicer than the other. Like the university town feel and benefits of being in the capitol? Go with Tally. Like the beach and benefits of a slightly larger metro (more prominent airport, for example)? Go with P'cola.
