Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense.

That's equivalent to saying only include the salary that you actually spend, not the amount that you put in the bank or otherwise have deferred for retirement purposes.

My annual income is so low that it can't really be considered gross in the literal sense of the word.

I once did some work for a guy who gave me a truckload of sheep manure for my garden as payment. That's the most gross income I've ever had.
