I stumbled across this on another CD forum and was pleasantly surprised to see Philadelphia on it. It's nice to see the city on a list for something generally seen as positive as opposed to "fattest" or "ugliest". It seems like we're starting to retain graduates of our local colleges if not also attract younger professionals from out of town. Perhaps when said hipsters decide to couple up and start a family, a critical mass might decide that, rather than head off to suburban pastures, to get involved in their neighborhood schools which would also be a positive. Much of the city's neighborhoods have room for improvement so I would welcome anyone that would bring vitality and disposable income.

Pretty much this. I personally find them a bit silly, but so are most people my age. Let them improve all the neighborhoods they can get their hands on.

the list is silly when it comes to measuring hipsters
Quote:
They ranked 35 metropolitan areas on culturally relevant features like live music, coffee bars, and independent boutiques. To zero in on the biggest hipster crowds, we also factored in the results for the best microbrews and the most offbeat and tech-savvy locals.
it's not a bad list in and of itself, with a different title

pman - I see what you mean based on your quote from the article. Perhaps "Top 10 Cool Cities" would have been less self-conscious and/or inclusive?

I've seen lots of talk about "ghetto" this and "ghetto" that on this forum but now that hipsters have discovered Philly, it's truly time to declare - "Katie bar the door!"

Of course, all things considered, it's a good problem to have.

the property values always seem to go up when gays and hipsters are involved.

Seattle doesn't really surpirse me. Philly is number 9? Not too shabby.

Uh, how did San Juan, PR beat out Philly is my question? lmao, there's no hipsters there. I was just there like 3 months ago. Did not see a ONE!!

pricans tend to be all about the latin bravado and macho-ism. I imagine a hipster walking through the streets of San Juan would get beat up IMO

Latin hipsters would actually be appealing on a number of levels, not all of them appropriate for CD open discussion.
