I went to Louisville this past March for a (good-weathered) weekend. Very nice. I liked it, but there weren't many people about. More than once, I walked a few blocks without encountering a soul. For a town that size, I found that odd. Where the hell was everybody?

I'm not booking my trip to Louisville or anything but they've getting a lot of press over the last 2-3 years as the new Austin (some people say "the new Portland".) To me it's kind of ignorant to insist that a place you've never visited isn't worth visiting or doesn't deserve to be at the top of the list.

Philly is in the top 5. Some 400 or 500 other likely places aren't on the list at all. Being pissed that Louisville got #1 is like being pissed that someone said Lancaster was a cool place to visit.
Lancaster is a cool place to visit, especially if you're a traingeek like me, what with the Strasburg Rail Road and State Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania just outside the city.

Obviously, several people missed the point of Lonely Planet's list. These aren't necessarily places lots of people visit. They're all places you should visit. The site, and the travel guides of the same name, delight in the offbeat and the undiscovered more than they do the familiar and the well-known. That should tell you a little something about our travel rep - in fact, the opening sentence of their blurb on the city does that too. What they're telling would-be visitors is that this place is more than the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

but here we wanted to dig deeper and shine a light on 10 places in the US that travelers should add to their wish lists for the coming year.

It seems ridiculous to criticize an article that tries to come up with original destinations, for not drawing from the Top 25.

That's not a list he made up. That is the 25 most visited places from 2008 or something like that.

Haha... but AC is a pretty awesome nightlife spot. It's like a smaller Las Vegas. Las Vegas isn't too pretty outside the tourist/casino area either.
