If Philly were to critical mass and become a full effective alternative to NYC would NYC just collapse?

Why would NYC collapse based on a more populous Philly? I can't think of any reason that makes sense.

It could take all those who have to have a NYC lifestyle but don't have any particular reason for it to be in NYC.

Huh?????
Even if that did actually happen I don't think Philly could support a population of 8 million right now, especially if the majority of New York City's population just all of a sudden moved to Philly in droves. The city would have to build up immediately to support such a huge population gain. Also the city's transit system would have to quadruple to support the population. Anyway this is an odd thread question.

I wasn't thinking it needed the same population to provide pockets of similar lifestyle.

Either way I don't see how that would make NYC collapse because it's economy is way too diversified for that to happen. NYC would still have the largest economy in the United States. Philly's status would most likely elevate it pass Chicago and the city would probably be neck and neck with Los Angeles for the #2 spot if that happened.

NYC is not guaranteed to keep growing, although it is likely. No city is immune from change.

It will be regarded as the second coolest place on the East Coast by outsiders after NYC. In other words, nothing has changed, because honestly, DC and Boston suck.

jk

We're all equally awesome here, except Baltimore.
