Does anyone disagree with the point made in the thread title?

Philadelphia is good if your goal is to work with small businesses, because if you lose a job, the metro is big enough to probably have another fit. It's also inexpensive enough.

No, disagreed. Philadelphia isn't small-business friendly (or business friendly at all for that matter). Is there a city for comparison purposes or are you just seeking validation?

he said philly metro. the city itself is small business friendly in that it's dense and affordable but the city government manages to overcome that and make it unfriendly. OTOH, considering the metro as a whole, the threadtitle isn't offbase.

I read post 2 via email and was going to comment, but post 3 basically says what I would have said.

I think Philly (whole metro) is a good place because it's the least expensive of the big metros. Chicago, New York (especially) and LA all cost more. It's fast paced, and people essentially want to get things done.

Maybe not the center city though for the reasons noted in post 2.

On the northeast, Baltimore is half the size, so if you lose a job in that metro, then you have less chances to find another one. Washington is all public jobs. Boston is smaller and more expensive. etc. Pittsburgh is too isolated and small, even though it's cheap, to be confident in finding another job if you lose one.

If the metro is too small, you might have to move to another one, and if the metro is too expensive, you might get priced out quickly if you lose your job.

Let me throw another talking point out there: turning PA into a right-to-work state. With an all Republican legislature and a Republican governor there's a good chance of this happening, there was a proposal made or a bill put forward just last winter. Good for Philadelphia? Bad?

Austin,
What unstable small business?
Your talking about being self employed right?
Is it seasonal?
Is it a service mabey that is very specific and you need a certain type of customer?
How can someone answer your question?
The city of Philly may be great for some businesses, depends on what it is.
The cost of living isn't cheap in PA at all, or anywhere for that matter today.
The correct answer is it "depends".
Good Luck to you, and do lots of research before you leap.
