Pat's and Gino's and both are pretty nasty. They are certainly not the best cheese steaks in Philly! I always liked the ones from the vendors the most, but you have to be careful and watch the vendors a while to see if they are clean. The ones in Center City below City Hall are usually pretty good. My favorites were at Broad & Spruce, by Utrecht, and one on 16th near Walnut. There are also lots of little diners or pizza places that make decent cheese steaks. I would avoid any of the touristy areas for food, though. Just walk a couple of blocks and you get better food for lower prices. One block south of South Street is Bainbridge. A little further and you reach Christian. Between the two there are lots of good places to eat. From Old city, walk west for maybe three blocks before you start looking. I used to go all the way to 10th and Chestnut if I was working in Old City, but there are some good places west of 8th and between Chestnut (on he north) and Locust (on the south).

Could someone tell me about the political division between Pat's and Geno's? Something about this guy named Abu Bakar or something?

Everyone has an opinion on this topic and no one is really wrong but I'll give my fav's and why.In no certain order;

1) Pork shack in south Philly.
2) Steve's prince of steaks in the N.E. (orig.location)
3)chinks steaks on Torresdale ave.

I made my pick based on this criteria,The quality of the meat,The freshness and quality of the roll,The quality and freshness of side items offered .
I worked as a short order cook all through high school and I feel I can tell the difference between a cheap lower grade product and a high quality well prepared sandwich.
There are ton's of little pizza places all over the city that make a great cheese steak and a lot of street side vendors that do too.
Pat's and Gino's I feel are way over rated and it's been 10 years since I stepped foot in a Jim's.There some other places that I liked but I feel there not as good anymore,Delasandro's(spl?) and Abner's in university city are examples of this.
As a side note if chinks offered fries i really think they would be the best in the city.

My favorite cheesesteak spot is "Paganos" on Ogontz Ave. in the Mt. Airy/West Oak Lane area. They are STUFFED with steak, they're actually heavy compared to other cheesesteaks--and GOOD. The funny thing is, I didn't know about Paganos when I lived in Philly. I'm not from that part of the city. But one of my Philly buddies from college here in Maryland is originally from Mt. Airy. He put me down with Paganos, now I drive all the way up to Ogontz Ave when I'm in Philly--just to get their cheesesteaks.

I went to Pudges in Blue Bell for the first time last week -- FANTASTIC. They steak meat is great, but what sets it apart is the rolls that they use.

Definitely the best cheese steak I've had since I moved here last year.
