What does “having it all” mean? Not having kids, according to the latest sure-to-be-controversial issue of Time magazine. It includes stories like “Do Children Bring Happiness—Or Misery?” and “I Just Don’t Want a Child,” noting that the American birth rate is lower than it’s ever been in recorded history.

No it's not selfish. And neither is having kids. To each his own. /story.

I'd expect the comments here to be pretty much the same as they are every time a "child-free" poster comes here and baits - just waiting for the handful of posters who will say that not having children is wrong/selfish etc. so they can post how awful parents treat them. MOST parents have no problem at all with those who choose not to have children, most parents are more upset with parents who never should have had children. If you don't want them, don't have them. Don't judge me for having them either though. As long as we're both on that page, no problem.

Couldn't care less about your reasons for being child-free. Neither do I expect that you care one bit about my reasons for having children. But I am getting awfully tired of the never-ending defensiveness and justification of lifestyle choices. That is all.

It's not selfish, childfree couples are not denying anyone anything, and it's not touchy since we all have our own lives to live.

I'll tell you what it is: MARKETING.

The vast majority of people really don't care if you have kids, why you do or don't have kids, or how you feel about those who do/don't have kids. Do what you want, be happy to be able to make your own choices, and let everyone else do the same.

I can't think of anything worse than having kids when you really don't want them, because your children would be the ones to suffer for it in the end.

It's "selfish" because the childfree individual is putting their own wants and needs above their "tribe"'s need to perpetuate, expand and dominate.

The government wants more soldiers and taxpayers.

Corporations need more cheap labor and consumers.

Organized religion wants more followers.

We are here to follow our bliss. This is viewed as "selfish," which is fine, if the definition of that word means honoring our path. For some who come into this reality, they CHOOSE to be parents, just as their offspring CHOOSE to be the children of so-and-so.

Personally, I love the energy of children however I have no desire to go backwards and have to deal with all the worldly aspects of raising a child. I prefer my freedom.
