If you are a Dr. as your screen name implies then you may want to consider some of the more upscale areas. Surprise is a great town but pretty middle class from what I know. You may want that? But just a bit further out are areas like Arrowhead etc that might be nice for you.

Arrowhead Ranch is a nice area, further than Surprise from the hospital. Part of it is in Peoria city limits, most of it is in Glendale. Finding the right home environment is a very personal thing that the opinions of others can only help with in a very limited way. If you are not going to have the opportunity to come out ahead of time to look around and find what you want, you need to stay in an extended stay hotel or some other short term housing in the area when you do come here to work, to give yourselves time to get familiar with the area and find the right place.

Surprise was recently voted one of the safest cities in Arizona. It was right behind Gilbert. I worked in Surprise for two years and it's a very nice part of the valley as long as you don't have to commute to downtown or the east valley.
I could be wrong, but I think I remember Surprise surpassing Gilbert as the "safest city".

The problem you are going to have with the Arrowhead area is that traffic on Bell Rd, Grand Ave, even Union Hills, can be horrible. What should be a 15 minute drive can easily be 30 minutes or more.

BTW, there are several "upscale" neighborhoods in Surprise (if that's what you are looking for).

Also, Arrowhead is not "better" than Surprise, just more established. Both areas are nice and have advantages and disadvantages. You've got to check them out and see what best fits you.

Vistancia was not a bad suggestion, either. It may be at your "limit" as far as drive time goes, though.

Desert Harbor area, 91st Ave and T-Bird. Homes on the lake and some nice ones in a newer (04-05 ish) development. But, how far from Del Webb, not sure. Maybe 20-25 minutes.

Vistancia, north Peoria sits up in the foothills and has several step up developments to choose from.TW Lewis is still building some very nice homes in gated communities within the master planned development. We have many doctors living here and it ony takes me 12 to 15 min to get to Del Webb taking the 303 loop now. Arizona Real Estate - Vistancia - Peoria AZ - Master plan Community
