If I'm somewhere outside clutching a beer in below freezing damp weather on New Years Eve it had better be in Times Square. 15 years in AZ has me me waaaay to whimpy for that stuff, I can't even get in a pool unless it is over 100 outside.

Ficus trees are a poor choice for many outlying areas of the Valley. We get at least one cold snap every winter that kills these plants that can't tolerate frost. Unless you live in or near Central Phoenix or Sky Harbor, it is not safe to plant vegetation that is not frost tolerant.

To respond to the OP: Until I see temperatures forecast under 32 degrees at the airport, I won't be concerned. This type of cold blast happens every year.

Today's forecast for the airport Thursday night is a low of 27.

Here's a snippet from this morning's weather discussion:

"ITS INTERESTING THAT ALL MODELS ARE STILL FORECASTING 700 MB
TEMPERATURES FRIDAY MORNING TO FALL TO AS LOW AS MINUS 12 DEGREES C
IN YUMA...AND MINUS 16 DEGREES C OVER PHOENIX. WHOA!

THE LAST TIME 700 MB TEMPERATURES WERE THAT COLD WAS DURING THE
KILLING FREEZE OF JAN 14 2007. THIS IS OUR ANALOGUE. ALTHOUGH NOT
MUCH RAIN FELL WITH THE COLD FRONT THE DAY BEFORE...700 MB
TEMPERATURES AT YUMA DROPPED TO MINUS 12 DEG C...AND MINUS 14 DEG C
AT PHOENIX. BELOW ARE MINIMUM TEMPERATURES THAT RESULTED FROM THAT
COLD AIRMASS OF JAN 14 2007.

PHOENIX SKY HARBOR AIRPORT.... 29 DEG F.
YUMA AIRPORT.................. 25
BLYTHE CA AIRPORT............. 25
IMPERIAL CA AIRPORT........... 21"

Still have your AC on? Maybe Phoenix isn't for you...I have not ran my AC since early October.

Yes it's changing quickly now.
Up here in Prescott we are showing snow for both Wed/Thursday.
But we have only had it 2 times this year so far and it's been really light both times.
Maybe we will bring in the New Years right!

Early October? Wow, you must either have a high heat tolerance or your house has great insulation or faces the right way.

We still use our AC in the house at times, like this weekend. The whole part of the house we "live in", so the family room, living room and kitchen, are all along the south wall of the house, so that part of the house gets blasted with the sun all day. If it's in the 70s outside, it gets to 78-79 degrees in the house easy. I like it at 77 at most so we have to kick the AC on.

[mod cut-- orphaned quote and response] We have a very energy efficient home that holds in the heat. It can be 50 outside and 80 in here.
The 74 degree winter has NOT been normal.

Yeah, when its in the 70's out, my house is in the 80;s. I like my house temp at 74 to feel prefect so have been running the ac. This is the first year I have had to run it this time of year.
