I commute to chandler weekdays, and I rarely hit a time when I would consider the trip "very slow". Typically I travel at the speed limit or above.
My neighbor travels to work weekdays by the airport, she only describes traffic as "very slow" when she gets into phoenix.
My wife commutes to Scottsdale for school and work. Her commute is typically 45 minutes to an hour. I wouldn't consider that "very slow" either.

That's the part I meant as being slow. It varies somewhat from day to day, and it certainly can vary a great deal given the time you hit that area as far as how backed up it gets. I think an hour commute IS very slow. Two hours out of a day on the road, plus living in Maricopa, which entails MORE driving to reach amenities it doesn't have? No thanks, especially not at today's gas prices.

I'm glad you and your neighbors are happy with it, and don't mind the driving and all the gasoline. It's not for everyone.

We currently live in the Chicago area and are thinking of moving to the Phoenix area. I have a brother who lives in se Gilbert. We have become intrigued with the idea of moving (renting) to a home in Maricopa. We both like the idea of living a little out of the way in a smaller town. I am 51 and retired and my wife is 52 and works part time in retail. Commuting to the east valley would be for recreation so we aren't too worried about commuting. We're coming to retire, enjoy the weather and scenery and to relax. I have severe arthritis and hoping the climate may help as well. Maricopa sounds ideal for us but a little worried about the talk of bad areas. We live in Aurora,Il which has 160000 peopele and the neighborhoods go from poor to $$$. All of the rentals online look great since they are all newer homes. Any subdivision to steer clear of? A simple 3 bedroom 2 bath home is what we are looking for in our search.

Maricopa would be great for you. Lots of homes for sale and there is even Province, a senior community there if you are interested. Its a drive into Phoenix, but not that far from the east valley. Interested in a casino or bingo? Very close by. Since you don't have kids, don't have to be concerned about the schools. Why not plan a week out here to actually see some of these houses and get a feel for the area. I am familiar with Aurora in IL. Maricopa is lots smaller but growing. Good luck to you.

We are thinking of moving to Maricopa from the Chicago area. Hearing a great deal of negativity about the town. We will be renting a home if we decide on staying in Maricopa. No need to commute to Phoenix as we are retired and in oir 50's. Every place has it's good and bad but is it that bad?

Frak -

Many of the people who voice negativity about the town here on C-D dont live there (not ALL but many), and some have never even BEEN there.

That said, the major complaint about the town is it's distance to many services. Those are starting to arrive (the local paper just yesterday had an anouncement about a 106,000 sq ft entertainment complex with movie theatres and 22 lane bowling alley etc. to be completed during 2012), but for now there is no hospital and limited shopping etc. It is a community that grew up VERY quickly as people wanted less expensive housing during the boom, and now the infrastructure is starting to catch up.

You CAN get TO services though within a reasonable amount of time, either in Casa Grande, or Chandler within about 30 mins.

If you want very inexpensive housing, and can put up with the time it will take for the infrastructure to get in place, you might like it. The crime rate is low, there is the casino nearby (if that is your thing), and it is all very "new" (most houses under 10 years old).

OK. I am an early resident from when there were just a few hundred people in Maricopa. I still have property there although I moved in the late 80's. I get back there every now and then.

As to not close to anything. There are several strip malls in Maricopa now. The casino is a few minutes away. Casa Grande is a 15 minute drive. Most people in Phoenix drive farther accross town then those who live in Maricopa and drive to Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Tempe, and all the other south and east valley locations. Like the other poster said. Many of the nay sayers don't live there.

My biggest complaint was the feedlots, smell, dirt, and dust with lots of germs. I lived just off Murphy Road and in fact was one of the original Saddle Back Vista residents who built most of the roads, the water system, and septic tank systems there.

Maricopa is rich with history.

Hi I'm a single mom and I have 2 school aged daughters and I live in a big city. I'm currently looking to relocate and I've been told by a couple of my friends to consider maricopa county in Arizona. I'm focused on good schools employment and safe and decent area to live. Would this be the idea place for me and my girls?
