I'm an African- American woman with a 10 year old son and I'm working on having a baby within the year with my domestic partner. Right now we live in the burbs, very quiet, nice quality of life, however Minnesota was never the place I wanted to spend the rest of my life so we want to make a move to Phoenix for a fresh start. I pay 880 for a 2 bedroom apartment and from what I see, the cost of living is much lower than here. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to where nice affordable neighborhoods are? Meaning I'm not looking to spend a thousand dollars on rent but I don't want to live in the "Hood" either. I want to find a place that is LGBT friendly as well as family oriented so that my son can make some friends. Also looking for information on the night life as my girlfriend is a recording artist and would want to be able to perform for open mics, things like that. Is there a local music scene for hip hop at all? things like that... Any suggestions?

Hi, I would suggest you look into North Phoenix for renting. West Phoenix is not as good unless you go to Glendale and Peoria I guess. Scottsdale is pricey but very nice. I wouldn't live in South Phoenix or anywhere close to the airport. As far as rent goes, I have no idea. I know it goes in the $800 range in a decent place. Sorry, I cannot be much help.

$800 will get you a three bedroom home in gated communities 45 minutes away from the Phoenix "night life" in San Tan Valley or Queen Creek.

Which gated communities are these?

The only one I know of (which isn't age restricted) is at Johnson Ranch, in San Tan Valley. It's way longer than a 45 minute commute to Phoenix night life from there.
