hello every one:

I am sure ppl have asked these questions in the past, so i apologize for asking them again.

i got a job offer for 80 K at PHX which consist of 70% traveling. I am becoming a Parent soon so i figure my expenses are high.

I have lived in NY all my life so this a big change for me. I have been reading about income tax, sales tax, car tax etc. its very different then our here.

As this comfortable salary cost wise for a family of 3. I am sure after state taxes its probably more like 60K.

not looking to buy a home right away, rent an apartment but from what i read its cheaper to buy home then rent, how true is that. I have not decided where to live yet but majority of ppl are saying chandler, gilbert, and mesa are safe places. please share ur thoughts?

Many people here get by with much less. Supporting three people on an $80k salary will allow you to get by just fine. Don't expect many luxuries, but you won't be poor if you budget wisely.

You're not going to live a lavish lifestyle on $80k but you can certainly get by comfortably if you live within your means. As DetroitN8V said, many are doing it on far less than that.

There are many "safe places" spread across the valley...where you will be working should be the major point in deciding what part of the valley to be looking at.

80K is a very good salary for the Phx area, even with a small family....as usual, budget, plan your expenses, save up for the future, don't build up debt or live extravagantly, the usual....

lots of choices out here....the area is very spread out and low-density compared to the east, so decide what part of the valley you'll need to be in.....though prices have gone up a bit for housing, I think you can breath a bit before buying one....try to find an appropriate rental for a few months and use the time to find a place to buy after you know what you need and after you get used to the Phx area.....

And even lots of nice homes for sale, if you want to jump in. Great schools here, easy commuting with nice roads, and friendly people. Groceries just about everywhere as are gas stations, parks, libraries, pools, etc. Plenty of docs too. Your property tax will be nothing close to NY.
