I'm a bit of a geography nerd, so am curious about this Commonwealth conundrum.....

it might have to do with original surveying of the area and the township/range lineups.....Baseline Rd and all that....the curvature of the Earth requires adjustments every six miles.....that's why you see slight bends/curves in major roads at times at an intersection

For people out there that still like paper maps, I think this company is the best for maps of the Phoenix area:

Wide World Maps & MORE! - Wide World of Maps - Map Center and Gallery - Arizona Map Headquarters - Phoenix Mapping Service - Travelers Map Supply

I found an aerial online from the '30s of Chandler. The center of town was definitely around Commonwealth. Over the years it progressed outwards. I'd link it but I don't want to right now.

Commonwealth Ave in Chandler is the street that runs dead center of the Old Downtown...where City Hall used to be. And just because everyone calls it the Phoenix Metro...we all don't have to subscribe to how Phoenix does things.

Mesa on the other hand confuses the heck out of me

Main Street makes sense for the north/south division, but I think Country Club would be better for the east/west division.

Perhaps, but it's not going to get changed after all this time based on what you think.

Try living in Boston or Pittsburgh for a couple of years and you could find your way around the East Valley with a blindfold on.

True. The Phoenix and Tucson areas do it a lot better than some other areas.

As long as I can find my way home and get my mail delivered I'm good.
