I thought the forum could use a light-hearted thread so chill out and don't take this one so seriously

Phoenix has become home to many transplants in recent years due to the cheap housing and pleasant climate. But it's always easy to spot them in a crowd of natives. Some giveaways include:
  • They call the I-17 the Black Canyon Freeway
  • They call Squaw peak Piestewa Peak
  • They go to AMC instead of Harkins
  • They go hiking in the middle of the day in the Summer
  • They wear shorts and tshirts outside in January
  • They wear $200 North Face hiking boots and carry trekking poles to climb North Mountain
  • They think In-N-Out is the best burger in town
  • They think people actually live Downtown

I'm a non native Arizonan and i'm sure many people will disagree at this list. You're just basically pointing out prejudgments of people and generalizing a whole population.

I know this is supposed to be "fun" but, honestly, I don't think this is accurate. The last one especially (as someone that lives downtown surrounded by apartments and homes).

People have only started moving Downtown in the last 10-15 years. And it's mostly transplants living down there. Established Phoenicians already have homes in the surrounding metro area.

Also have a beer and lighten up

Not really.

Your post is good and I can think of a lot of attributes I place on transplants. But while I don't live Downtown per se, I do live in Central Phoenix with a lot of natives, many natives do live Downtown although it is a pretty decent mix. Most of the transplants are in the burbs, especially in the NW areas.

I have a few criteria.

Transplants:

Glow in the Sun
Talk about Chicago
Miss Cali
Enjoy those Saggywauro Cactuses they see on their hiking trails
Enjoy authentic Mexican Food at Macayos and Garcias.

Okay, I'm confused. How does someone referring to I-17 as the Black Canyon Freeway make them a recent transplant?

When I first moved to Phoenix in the 80s, the name of the street I lived on was Black Canyon Highway, since it bordered I-17.

I think most newbies never even heard of the Black Canyon Freeway, as nowadays almost everyone calls freeways by their numerical names.
