I've been to Phoenix before with a friend, but never traveled there on my own. I fell in love with the desert scenery and landscape in the time that I spent there, and would love to find a place in Phoenix of my own. I would like to rent somewhere in the area that's close to things, events, etc. I'm hoping to find a place in the city that is cool to live in that's safe for a single person.

I want to mention that I have close friends who tell me things like "You won't be able to touch the steering wheel in your car because it gets so hot!" or "You'll get second degree burns if you sit on your car seat in the Summer!". I plan on buying a car when I get settled in Phoenix and I don't want to be afraid to drive in the Summer heat, so does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the car cool when I'm at work or running errands?

TIA!

Get tinted windows, park in a parking garage, or try and find one of the few trees to park under for shade, thats about it. Oh, maybe throw a towel over the steering wheel and get one of those windshield visors.

Or just become a vampire and only come out at night.

Your friends are exagerrating just a bit. Some employers provide covered parking, which solves the problem. If you don't have covered parking or are out running errands, tinted windows and a good sunshade placed in the winshield will help. You can't keep your car cool here in the summer but with a minimum of effort you'll never have to worry about burning yourself on the steering wheel or seats.

Tinted windows sounds cool! I always wanted that, but I was told it wouldn't be legal if it was made too dark, and I'd get pulled over a lot by the cops where I live now. Is there a limit to how dark it can be in Arizona?

I already have a big windshield cover/visor I use in the Summer where I'm at now, and I just saw some advice in another post about using cloth covers for the seats and steering wheel so I'll try that too (in case I can't park in a covered or shady spot).

I don't think I'd succeed very well in Phoenix as a Vampire. I've got to pay the rent somehow and I prefer a day job.

I have leather seats and they are never an issue with being too hot. Matter of fact, I complain more in the winter with them being too cold.

Do all that the others have said and you won't have too much of a problem.

Leather seats in Phoenix?! I can't begin to imagine them even here... You've gotta be a bigger lizard than I am!

I don't know what it is but I haven't had any problems with them being hot. I always heard to stay away from them here. They are tan in color so maybe that helps. Maybe they're higher quality and don't get hot?

Maybe light color or good quality helps. Granted, I've never had them, but the thought of them somehow doesn't appeal to me. Ha-ha, that's deja vu. I believe we were discussing the same topic once on Fri night again and somebody told me to get a life... I thought we should have cooling seats (since others have heating) and it turned out they actually exist!

I do remember getting stuck in really bad traffic between I-17 and I-10 once around July 4th wearing shorts... I swear I almost smelled my fat burning!

Fat burning!? You could make a lot of money if you get a patent on that!

I don't have covered parking, so I have to absord the full brunt of the heat! During the hotter months of the year I use my fold up metallic sun reflector religiously, every single time I park the car. It's still incredibly hot when I open the car door, but I won't burn myself. BTW, those canvas sun shades are worthless, IMO, you need an actual reflector to put under the windshield. What I normally do is unlock the car, open the door, get in with one foot in, one foot out, turn it on, immediately blast the AC on the highest setting (even though it won't get cool immediately, air is better than no air), keep the door open for about 10 seconds, shut it, let the car cool down for about a minute, then remove the sun reflector and drive.
