That would seem to indicate there's great deep dish pizza here. Where is it?

Culver’s is nothing special. The only fangirls are Midwestern transplants who rave over it because it’s more greasy, fried crap which Midwesterners seem to love (e.g. Portillo’s and the extremely overrated deep dish “pizza” joints). The only times I’ve gone has been at someone else’s urging. Their custard is good, but nothing to rave about.

Lou Malnati's if that is your thing. Or Gino's East.

Giordanos isnt bad either, and Oregano's is good too, although I dont think Oregano's has any Chicago ties the way Lous/and Giordanos does..

looking forward to trying Gino's East this weekend, so props to the guy who mentioned it!

Now, if there was only a Lou Malnatis and a Portillos in the west valley...

.

In my opinion, that is the Achilles heal of Culver's. There is no consistency from location to location EVEN in places like Wisconsin and Illinois where they have a stronghold. They are too reliant on "mom and pop" owners who choose how they are going to operate.

When you have that culture and you start opening places 1800 miles from your home base in a population that is generally unfamiliar with the product, it is a recipe for disaster. My one experience with the Tucson location has encouraged me to wait until I get back to the Midwest to stop at a Culver's.

Yeah, it must be sooo "overrated".

It must suck to have sucky taste buds, bud.
Portillos, the international tourist destination.

I realized that when I went back last night. Don't know why I thought "Union Hills", it's on Deer Valley.

Its like going to Philly and not getting a cheesesteak at Pat's or Geno's. Or going to NYC and not getting NY pizza. Yes, its a tourist destination. Don't cry that PHX has no such comparable thing.
