We do go up to Glendale's Westgate Entertainment center a lot to eat or go to hockey games and that isn't far either, about 25 minutes. I guess overall we don't mind driving a half and hour to get somewhere, whereas people on these boards act like 30 to 45 minutes is a lifetime. Your forum name is Detroit, so I'm guessing you are from that area, didn't you drive about 30 minutes or so to go out to restaurants, sporting events, festivals, etc? When we lived in Fenton, MI it was about one hour away from almost any place we went and it didn't bother us at all. Maybe we are just used to driving to places so the drives to places out here aren't a big deal.
I'm upset that I never made it to Milk Bar. I hope something cool goes in that space. Angel's Trumpet Ale House, Short Leash, Mother Bunch Brewing, Blue Hound Kitchen, Gallo Blanco, Clever Koi, The Duce, Mora Italian, Otro Cafe, Joe's Midnight Run, The Nash. That's just scratching the surface.

I lived in Royal Oak and Birmingham so I had a suburban setting, but tons of dining and entertainment within spitting distance. Sure, we drove to DTE, The Palace and downtown, etc., but I would never want to live somewhere that didn't have good options for the times that you don't feel like a drive. I guess if you're from Fenton, you're used to it though. It's just not something for me and a 15 minute drive to basic amenities isn't attractive just to get a cheaper house. But, different strokes...

I used to work in Royal Oak so I'm familiar with the Woodward Avenue plethora of restaurants and entertainment. We lived on the east side too, St. Clair Shores, Harrison Twp, even up in Richmond. Fenton was our first step to the West - and then we really went West after that by coming out here! LOL!

The Milk Bar had really good Polish food (and beer!), being from the Detroit area where we could go to Hamtramck for excellent Polish cuisine, I'm bummed that it closed. We do go to the Polish restaurant in Glendale and it's pretty good.

Thanks for the recommendations for Phoenix, I'll look them up and try some of them out!

In addition to what Detroit mentioned I can add quite a few more, and this really is just covering the downtown Phoenix area

Pizzeria Bianco (voted top nationally on more than one occasion)
Pomo Pizzeria (also receiving national accolades)
Harumi Sushi (incredible sushi IMO their purple rice is really interesting)
Nobuo Japense Cusine (another great sushi spot)
Breadfruit Rum Bar (the biggest rum selection downtown and amazing Jamaican food)
Seamus McCaffreys/Chambers/The Kettle Black (All great Irish pubs/restaurants downtown)
Hannys One of the most historical buildings downtown, make sure you check out the basement
Matts Big Breakfast/LoLos/Breakfast Club round out my favorites for brunch/breakfast
Looking for dinner with a view? Compass Room does it better than about anywhere else in the valley
Chef Silvia Esperanza's Barrio Cafe, voted of the top Mexican restaurants in the nation
On the funkier side- Carlys Bistro, the self described Bohemian eatery
Coffee Houses- Jobot, The Grand, Fair Trade Coffee, Songbird, Hidden track, Velo bike/cafe bar
Ice Cream/Desert- Melt, Novel, and Nami

Beyond eating, there's pretty much endless stuff to do-
Cobra Arcade Bar is awesome, all the old games from my child hood
Adult nights at AZ Science Center, called Science with a Twist is fun
We frequent Standup Live as well
Crescent Ballroom, Van Buren, Comerica, Last Exit Live, The Pressroom, Lost Leaf, Valley Bar, The Nash and Copper Blues have more music than I can keep up.
Performing arts covers everything from the Symphony, Opera, Ballet and Broaway musicals

Phoenix Art Museum, The Heard, Herberger, Orpheum, Talking Stick Arena, and Chase Field have pretty non-stop events
Festivals are held regularly at Hance park with everything from McDowell Mtn Music Festival, St. Patrick's Day festival, beer festivals, food truck events and who knows what else.

Thanks! I'll have to watch out for more things, it just seems like every time we drive through Phoenix on the weekends it's desolate, not many people out and doesn't look like anything is happening. I guess when there is an event it must be more busy?

Where are you driving through? There’s always people out and about by Cityscape, Roosevelt Row, and Phoenix Public Market is jamming every sat morning for the farmers market. It doesn’t look like Times Square or anything but you’ll see people out, especially on weekend night. There’s events of varying size every night.

Depending on what you may be into there’s a lot of places to keep an eye out, New Times has a fairly good event list page but if you’re looking for something specific I tend to follow venues I like so I don’t miss something good. Film Bar is another one I missed, best indie theater in the valley.

I'll have to try some more spots that you mentioned above. I will say, I've been to Pizzeria Bianco a few times. Honestly, I don't see what all of the fuss is about. Maybe it was my mood that day or I order the wrong pie. But during my life, I can think of several hundred other pizza joints that I like better. But the vibe of the area adds value. So worse case, it's a good spot to try.

I agree. I think Cibo is actually better. Mora makes a mean pie too.

I don’t take it personal, I’m not chef Bianco lol. I will say if you don’t like a certain pizza joint in Phoenix just go 1 block in about any direction because we’ve got a TON of pizza joints here with almost any kind of speciality you could ever ask for. Just downtown alone you’ve got what 5 others? La Piazza, Pomo, people pizza pub, forno, grand avenue pizza... more I’m sure

Thankfully the BEST pizza in Phoenix is made in my back yard as I got tired of looking and built my own wood fired oven!

Jim give this one a try. Use a tortilla for the pizza crust. It's a lower calorie "crust" that can be prepared instantly. I use it for my Traeger wood pellet grill with great success.
