Hi all,

My husband and I are looking into moving to Phoenix from Cincinnati for various reasons. When searching for apartments and looking through reviews we constantly saw cockroaches being mentioned- even in the very nice and very expensive apartments! Here in Cincinnati we certainly have our problems and we see our fair share of silverfish, centipedes, stink bugs, etc., but nothing strikes fear into us like the cockroach. Honestly, what should we expect? Are there certain neighborhoods that have it worse? Should I just accept the fact that turning on the light at night to go to the kitchen will spotlight at least one? *shudders*

Thank you for any and all assistance!

Same rules apply in Phoenix as anywhere else...cockroaches are going to come looking for easy food. Our cockroaches aren't the sewer cockroaches though...they are typically the AZ Desert cockroaches. Just be careful...they fly.

Oh, and then there are these guys

If you live in the city you’ll have sewer roaches and plenty of them.

Plug your drains!

If you’re in an apartment, you’ll likely always have to contend with roaches wherever you live. Shared walls with dirty people...

Oh yeah, the Palo Verde beetles. Google them, if you dare. They emerge late June from the ground and start flying all over the area. They are huge, they can pinch like a muthafunka, and they gross me out. Come June, I pack my crap and head indoors as soon as dusk approaches, simply because of those terrors. I swear they like to land on or next to people on purpose. And no, this is not a joke. They're disgusting. Give me roaches ANY DAY over the Palo Verde beetles. Any day.

Yeah sorry, that is not a cockroach...that is a Palo Verde Beetle. Pretty freaky the first time you see one.

As far as the sewer roaches, while we see scorpions, I haven't seen many of the black type roaches, they are mostly the brown/AZ Desert roaches...but those are mostly outside unless the cat brings one in. Maybe the scorpions are eating the sewer roaches?

Agreed with the Apartment situation, you can't control the cleanliness of your neighbors so the sewer roaches may be a problem, I am not sure anymore since my recent experience with Apartments is nil.

My wife and I had to rent an apartment when we moved to Dodge City, KS, in July of 2015. Roaches galore - and it was because of dirty neighbors. The landlord did nothing - we finally fled in December of 2015 to a rental house. We were so happy to have a house of our own - even though we were only renting!
