Tell me about the unique neighborhoods of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe! I'm flying in at the beginning of March to do some apartment hunting, and want to check out the neighborhoods.

Countless neighborhoods, huge land area.give some specifics about your budget, space requirement, and where you regularly gotta be, and you will get some great answers. Some of the oldest, funkiest hoods, have few apartments.

True. The only exception to that which comes to mind is Tempe, with several small complexes in the older area south and west of the ASU campus. But, given that area's proximity to ASU, I suspect they are high priced for what they are.

The historic neighborhoods north of downtown Phoenix don't have much for apartments IN them, but there has been a huge upsurge in apartment building nearby. The most obvious is The Muse at Central and McDowell. Alta Midtown and Broadstone Arts District are a couple of others.

Roosevelt Row and Maple Ash come to mind as funky and somewhat interesting. The former more so. There really aren't too many that fit that category unfortunately.

Rode my bike through these recently for the first time. Loved it. Changed my mind about Phoenix and its lack of old quirky city neighborhoods.

I disagree. Maple Ash has a really interesting and involved community, I have several friends who live in Maple-Ash-Wilson-Farmer (Mawf is what it's also called as well). Roosevelt Row doesn't seem to have such a community, and if they did, the gentrification of the luxury apartments sent them out ages ago. Maple-Ash is under threat for this with the ASU luxury apartment expansion.

Could RoRo have such a community? Yes, if the rents came down. I can still find affordable places in Maple-Ash if I look right now. Yes even though it's next to ASU. It has a lot more "hole in the wall" apartments hidden on Craigslist not bought out by developers that still keep affordable apartments near ASU. Having the Orbit lines in Tempe help to spread out the student population also. Phoenix doesn't have such a system for its growing downtown student population.

I'm just looking for a rundown of the neighborhoods. I am doing fine on finding potential apartments, just want some info on the neighborhoods so that I can go exploring while I'm in town looking at apartments.

Cool, I'll have to explore MAWF. Casey Moore's and Cartel are really the extent of my exposure so I need to check out more I guess.
