Headed to Tempe at the end of August for an annual conference after an absence last year for reasons most everyone can guess at. I was wondering what new restaurants there are on along Mills Avenue, the conference is held close to the ASU campus, and what restaurants have closed. I'm told that Rula Bula and La Bocca closed. I was particularly fond of La Bocca and hate that it closed. I'm mostly looking for places within walking distance of Mills Avenue, but anything in Tempe is fair game.

What restaurants should I make a point of checking out?

You're right about Rula Bula and La Bocca closing. Other recent closures include Americana and El Jefe.

A new place that has opened on Mill is Detroit Coney Grill. It's named for the distinctive way that hot dogs are served in Detroit, but it has a broader menu with burgers and some bar snacks. The new location on Mill also has a liquor license with Michigan brews like Bell's and Founders on tap.

Not new, but still among my favorites in the area:

House of Tricks

Postino
Phoenicia
Med Fresh Grill
Pedal Haus

Also, there's one new place I've heard good things about but haven't yet had a chance to visit. It's called Alter Ego, and it's located in a new hotel in downtown Tempe.

Cornish Pasty is great and I really like Mr. Mesquite taqueria on mill for great street tacos and burritos. Also Ike's love and sandwiches is kind of a bay area legend.

I believe the Mill Avenue location of CPC is still closed; however, the original at University & Hardy is open and not that far away.

Ike's is great if you happen to also love legendary bay area prices.

I don't know if they have it here, but back in SF, they had a 4lb sandwhich called the kryptonite. That thing was a beast to eat.

Maya on Church St was better than anything I ever had in AZ, but Picante in Berkeley was THE best, until a new owner ruined it about 1994. Oh, Taqueria San Jose in Fruitvale was legendary.. and I believe they were Mexicans from Sonora.

No, it closed in 2009.

Ra Sushi on Mill Avenue also closed a few years ago, which is sad because it was one of my favorite places to get Asian styled take outs. Thankfully, they still have other locations, but the one on Mill was really convenient for lunch since my office is close by.
