One huge consideration for a retiree moving anywhere is the availability of medical resources.

In the Phoenix area, is it easy or difficult to find good care for new retirees on either a Medicare of Medicare Advantage plan?

What are your experiences?

It's my experience that nearly every doctor and facility accepts Medicare around here. Medicare Advantage are usually HMO, so typically you are limited, but they are pretty broad as well.

Top tier facilities like Mayo don't accept Advantage plans. They do, however, accept Medicare Supplement plans. Supplements are also not HMOs. Much more protection IMO. I have no idea about primary care docs in the Phx. area.

Primary care docs will accept you. As long as you have a referral from your PCP, you're fine with an HMO to see a specialist. I do this for a living. We have tons of Medicare patients in the valley who get great medical care.

From 2017 one change may be with Excess Charges. If you ask you may find most doctors don't do this. But you have to ask to be sure. This may apply to some specialists.

You may find some PCP not accepting new patients but there should be someone else in the practice that does.

Are there no cost Advantage plans available in the valley?

Go to eHealth.com Yo need to enter a zip code. You can then sort Advantage Plans available in your zip code and compare. You can sort and use filters with $0 premium etc. Some have a Part B giveback. Very useful website.

When I turn 65, I will do everything in my power to avoid Advantage plans like the plague. Nothing but trouble. I'll be sticking with original Medicare with a supplement. To answer the OP's question, if you're sticking to original Medicare, there are no issues. You can go anywhere, without issue. Be careful with (Dis)advantage plans, though. You get get stuck for life on a very, very bad plan. Contrary to popular belief, they are NOT free.

So you're not 65 yet, but you're an expert on Advantage Plans?

My Advantage Plan offers everything I need.

Excellent!
We have Traditional Medicare plus Plan F and have been very happy. Just look through your Medicare and You book to see the out of pocket and other charges for the Advantage free policies. I can't believe people are still chasing "free" when it is so expensive. Corporations are loyal to their share holders not patients...I am also a share holder and would never buy one of their policies.
