Have only been in PHX for a month, but have noticed an abundance of SUV's and giant pickups, usually 2-3 feet off the ground (large tires w/ lift kits).

My question is....why?

Of course ignoring the fact fact that some people have large families and jobs that require trucks.

If gas-gusslers would become less popular, the demand for oil would plumit, along with the prices.

Please, I'm not wanting to start an argument, but just want to hear some peoples reasonings.

Some actually use them to tow and/or go off-roading, others just buy them as some kind of lame status symbol to make up for their winkie size/insecurity.

Wow, we've downsized from a Durango to an Escape and love it! Now my husband drives my car to work since I don't drive and it's cheaper, but we like having an SUV ofr convinience. For us Home Depot is a regular shopping place and we need to transport all the household things we buy from there as well as my husband just loves having his vehicle. We downsized because the gas was so outrageous, but we have good mileage now and don't use it very often now.

There are a few specialized dealers that do that, as well as carry off-road modifications for the trucks as well. Sad thing is, most buyers of those trucks do it just for image. Most of those trucks will never see an off-road trail. My buddy has a sticker on his S-10 (with 6.0L V8 and 12" of lift) that says "God invented asphalt so the yuppies can go off-roading". Too true.... too true.

It's easier to blame Bush and besides, it's their American right to drive a 10MPG vehicle.

A lot of trucks are bought by construction workers. Just because they lost their jobs are they supposed to dry up and blow away?

4 reasons for trucks/suv's. 1- work related, 2- large families, 3- status symbol for the high risers, 4- off roaders.

I would put status symbol in the first 5 reasons then work then family then off-roading at number 20.
